If you're keen to see bats in action or want somewhere where you're guaranteed to be able to try out your bat detector there are several places in East Lancashire that offer good opportunities with excellent bat habitat. Towneley Park, Burnley. Located on Burnley's urban fringe Towneley's parkland and ponds offer a great place to observe bats in action. Towneley Hall has a resident maternity roost of Common Pipistrelles and Daubenton's bats can be observed feeding over any of the parks ponds. Natterer's and Brown Long Eared bats are found hunting amongst the shrub layer of the Bird Reserve in Towneley woods. Noctule bats are often heard feeding over the River Calder that runs through the park. A bat box scheme is managed and monitored by the Bat Group. More information on Towneley Wycoller Country Park Wycoller Country Park is located on the East Lancashire border with West Yorkshire. The park features ponds, woodland, upland grassland and river habitats that support a surprisingly diverse population of bat species. More information on Wycoller Leeds to Liverpool Canal Passing through several East Lancashire towns, the canal offers a great opportunity to observe bats. Most likely species to be encountered are Daubenton's a classic "over water hunter".
